Choosing the Right Motorcycle Clothing for Wet and Cold Conditions: A MotoCAP Guide

With the shortest day of the year behind us, temperatures are low and the weather changes quickly. In these conditions, selecting the appropriate motorcycle gear is crucial for safety and comfort. The Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program (MotoCAP) provides independent testing to help riders make informed decisions.

Stay dry without compromising safety and comfort

In rainy conditions, it's essential to wear gear that prevents water penetration while allowing sweat to escape. MotoCAP evaluates the water-resistant capabilities of motorcycle clothing by measuring how much water seeps through the fabric in conditions mimicking real riding. Products are scored out of 10, with higher scores indicating better water resistance. Use the weather filter to check on the performance of gear that is advertised as water resistant.

Options with good water resistance scores and at least 3 stars for safety include:

  • Alpinestars Halo Drystar: Scoring 10/10 for water resistance.
  • RST Tractech Evo 4 Mesh CE: Offers a balance between water resistance and airflow.
  • Dainese Ladakh 3L: Features a three-layer construction for enhanced waterproofing.
  • Belstaff Ariel Pro Waxed Cotton: Combines traditional styling with modern waterproof technology.

For cold weather: Insulation and wind protection

Riding in cold conditions requires gear that insulates and protects against wind chill. Being cold can slow your reaction times and turn an enjoyable ride into a nightmare. Look for clothing with:

  • Insulated and windproof materials: These help maintain body heat.
  • Close-fitting openings: Prevent cold air from entering.
  • Removable thermal liners: Allow for temperature adjustment. Check the product descriptions on motocap.com.au to see if a thermal liner is supplied.

Heated gloves are beneficial for long-distance winter riding.

Other accessories like neck socks or balaclavas can also significantly reduce heat loss from the neck and face.

Enjoy your ride and use MotoCAP to choose the right gear to allow you to stay warm and protected this winter.
